Neighbourhood guide: Clerkenwell

Does Clerkenwell ring a bell? You may have seen it mentioned in one of Shakespeare’s plays: Henry IV. Its name comes from a variant of clerc which means clergyman.

Clerkenwell used to be known as London’s “Litlle Italy” in the 1850s as over 2,000 Italian had settled there. Although the entire community did not stay there, the area is still highly influenced by its history.
Indeed, when it comes to eating out, you will surely be seduced by the variety of Italian restaurants that can be found there. Scared of getting bored with Italian food? There are many other restaurants, offering from Spanish to Vietnamese or Chinese cuisine.

There is a wide variety of cultural venues in the area as well: from the British Postal Museum & Archive to the Charles Dickens’ Museum or The British Museum.

The nearest tube station is Angel where you can take the Nothern line, Barbican is also a short walk away and you can take Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines. If you need to take the train, Farringdon station is also very close.
